The Safe and Drug Free Schools Program for the Weakley County Schools coordinates efforts made on behalf of the Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Act of 1994 and the Safety Act of 1998. These are federal and state funded efforts designed to further school activities which endeavor to create safe atmospheres for learning.
Programs and activities currently in progress are:
Character Education – All schools are evaluating the "Character Counts!" program, which emphasizes the qualities of responsibility, respect, caring, trustworthiness, fairness, and citizenship.
Student Assistance Program – Services contracted with Baptist Behavioral Health Services to provide aid to students with academic, family, behavioral, or personal problems.
Mentoring Program – A multi-agency endeavor which targets 5th and 6th graders.
School Resource Officers
> safety and law-based instruction,
> assistance in conflict resolution,
> additional guidance resources,
> juvenile petition filing,
> monitoring of the safety and security of students, faculty, and staff.
Safety Training – Nationally renowned speaker, Peter Blauvelt, spoke at a day-long safety conference for supervisors, principals, faculty, secretarial staff, and community members. Second Step, a violence prevention program designed to develop empathy and encourage the use of impulse control and anger management in students, was used to train primary/elementary school educators. Kits for grades 1-3 were provided for each school representative. |
