This is the image for the news article titled Gleason Address Change Adds More ChampionsAs of March 3, anyone mailing packages to Gleason School or using GPS maps will need to enter a new address. Due to recent changes in the 911 and postal systems, a dash can no longer be used, making 92-99 State Championship Drive obsolete. The new address – 3 State Championship Drive – reflects both a response to change and the inclusion of the third and, to-date, un-heralded (at least where the address is concerned) team of champions.

Current County School Director Randy Frazier was known as Coach Frazier when Gleason School supporters surprised the 1992 state champion Lady Bulldogs with a rather unusual memorial to the accomplishment of bringing the first state win to the town. The school changed its address from 101 Front Street to 1992 State Championship Drive. In 1999, when another state trophy was earned, the address was adapted to include that year as well and the hyphenated moniker of 92-99 remained, even when the 2007 girls collected one more state title.

Lee Lawrence, who assumed the Gleason principal role two years ago and is also the school’s athletic director, wanted to commemorate all three teams but discovered that a six-digit number isn’t conducive to the postal and other systems. He also learned that at the time, making such a change was a convoluted affair. After facing several roadblocks, he abandoned the project.

Then two weeks ago the 911 emergency system and post office both contacted Lawrence about a change that would no longer allow for a dash to be included in the address.
“If we were going to change, now was the time,” Lawrence acknowledged. “We did some polling on how we could incorporate recognition for all three teams best and that led us to 3 State Championship Drive.”

“And now we’ve learned, that should we add another championship, we can easily make the change,” he said, adding that it allows for further incentives for future teams. “We can say, ‘you need to be the team that makes us change to 4, to 5.”

State Skills signNaming streets and alleyways has become the norm for the small school that celebrates big wins with signage. A state skills win for agriculture in 2005 and again in 2014 netted a strip of road on the northwest side of the campus to be deemed the crossroads of 2005 State Skills Champion and 20014 State Skills Champion.

“We are looking at more areas we can designate to honor future winners,” he concluded.
