This is the image for the news article titled Weakley Playhouse Announces Inaugural Short Scene CompetitionAs students take to the stage in November for Weakley Playhouse’s first theatrical production, the new Weakley County Schools option for theater buffs is also offering a chance for those drawn more to the page than the stage.

Middle- and high-school students are invited to submit original theatrical scenes in a county-wide competition, Playhouse director and Westview teacher Martin Kane recently announced to area schools. Submitted scripts will be judged, and the winners will be produced and performed by the students in Weakley Playhouse. Students are also invited to audition to direct or act in a winning scene which will be performed this spring at Martin Coffeehouse in downtown Martin.

According to Kane, the rules of the competition are:
• The scene must be entirely original work by the student.
• The scene should be between 7 and 10 minutes in length. (At a rough estimate, 1,000-1,200 words results in that timing.)
• The scene should not include changes of location. The scene must take place in one spot and, unless the writer is creative about it, one time.
• The scene must include only two or three characters. The performing venue will not allow for a large cast.

The theme of the competition is CAFÉ SCENES. All of the scenes should involve characters interacting with each other at a coffee shop. Whether the characters behave as one normally would at a coffee shop is up to the writer.

Kane took part in student-written shows in high school and want to give students a similar experience.

"Theater incorporates all of the arts -- creative writing, visual art, and dance as well as acting,” noted Kane of his rationale for establishing the competition. “Weakley Playhouse strives to give the county's students the opportunity to participate in every stage of the theatrical process."

All scenes must be submitted by December 10 to receive consideration for the contest. All county English teachers have received the details and additional information on formatting the submission.

Scripts should either be emailed to [email protected] or typed, printed, and delivered to Martin Kane at Westview. A cover page with the title of the scene in quotation marks, writer’s name, grade, school, and email address is also required.
