Sharon Students Splash at Back-to-School Bash

After parents and siblings visited the students’ rooms and met teachers, Principal Michelle Clements then convened the large group in the gym to introduce faculty and share several announcements.

Girls playing in water with rainbow overheadShe explained that as a Title 1 school, federal funds were provided to cover the cost of a Literacy Leader, two teachers and 13.5 hours per day for Educational Assistants and parent involvement materials and supplies.

crowd She then detailed how Sharon is utilizing Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) and how students who SOAR (Safe, On task, Always Achieving, Respect) will be rewarded.

An invitation to a “very special” parent teacher conference on September 19 was extended. “We are hosting a community-wide event,” she explained and encouraged the crowd to invite others to join the afternoon of activities ranging from haircuts to blood pressure checks, from art lessons to exercise.

Attendance was also addressed in her brief remarks. After explaining that students who miss 10% of a school year are considered “chronically absent,” she then encouraged the students directly, reminding them, “We can’t teach you if you’re not here. We need to work on that this year.”

Fire trucks and children playing in distanceFire Department Chief Gary Eddings introduced Deputy Scotty Hodges of the Sheriff’s Department and Recon, the dog who demonstrated his role on the force by sniffing out which of two containers included illegal drugs. Eddings then invited the group to join him and other firefighters outside for a splash pad experience made possible with the fire hydrant and hose.

As children finished their ice cream treats they squealed with delight at both the spewing water and the chance to see rainbows in the water’s mist.
