Fourth and fifth graders from Martin Elementary will don their red and white stovepipe hats and rhyme their way through Seussical, the Musical, November 15, 16 and 17 in the school’s multi-purpose room. Shows will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The 55 students making up the cast were selected last May and have been rehearsing with director Robin Pape since school began. Students and parents have also taken on roles in set construction and other behind-the-scenes tasks making this a truly school-wide entertainment event. Westview students have also assisted with producing staging elements.

At the high school level, the production of Charise Castro Smith’s Feathers and Teeth is a countywide affair scheduled for November 14, 15, and 16 in Westview’s Theater. The self-proclaimed “gory, dark comedy” marks the debut of the newly-formed Weakley Playhouse, which opened up auditions to all the county high schools and ultimately formed two casts. Each cast will take the stage two times during the three-night run.

The play’s monsters provides a comical overlay for the very serious subject matter of teens dealing with parental loss and the introduction of a new stepmother. Obsession, fear and grief are all touched upon as the young cast juggle both comedy and drama.

Westview teacher Martin Kane, who offered a theater option for Martin students in the 2018-19 school year, assumed the role of Weakley Playhouse director this year and launched the county-wide effort when the new school year began. Casting calls were made and auditions held in August.

While this production’s cast is small, students interested in theater have had the opportunity to work on sets, sound and special effects – as no actual monsters will appear onstage, noted Kane.

Two other productions are planned for the high school players – A Midsummer’s Night Dream in early spring and Alice in Wonderland at the end of school year. A writer’s competition is also now underway.
