Dear Parents/Guardians,

We have now completed the first month of the '21-22 school year. During September's school board meeting I shared that the number of daily positive cases so far this year are much higher than last.

As predicted by medical professionals, the variant is spreading faster among school aged students. To give perspective, the highest daily number of identified positive cases for the district last year was 31 student and 13 staff cases, compared to our highest numbers so far this year of 85 student positives and 21 staff.

Due to this increase in positive cases, we're experiencing a greater need to quarantine students and staff. Again, to give perspective, in terms of the number of quarantined individuals, the highest daily number of close contacts for the district last year was 368, compared to this year's 426. These quarantine numbers, which include community, household and in-school contacts, would have been significantly higher if numerous students and staff hadn't become fully vaccinated.

We know the value of students experiencing in-person learning. Did you know there are exceptions to this guidance?

• The student/staff may test between day 5-7 and return to school on day 8 if they have no symptoms and a negative test

• Fully vaccinated persons do not have to quarantine unless symptoms develop
All students aged 12 and up are eligible to receive vaccinations (see https://www.vaccines.gov).

• If the person with COVID-19 and the close contact have been correctly and consistently wearing well fitted masks, the close contact does not have to quarantine

• Persons who have had Covid-19 illness within the previous 3 months do not have to quarantine unless symptoms develop

We know it is difficult, but mask wearing does offer multiple benefits. We strongly encourage all students and staff to wear masks when indoors and unable to socially distance.
Working together, we can help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Thank you,
Randy Frazier
