Initially scheduled for February 11 with a “snow date” of February 18 that was also postponed due to weather, the event finally took place last Thursday. And the weather saw fit to support the theme of “Bloom Where You Are Planted” with sunny skies for the travel from Dresden and Gleason to the host site at Westview.

The mini leadership conference was planned as a response to the fall conference’s cancellation due to COVID-19. The state meeting will be virtual this spring and county FCCLAs wanted the opportunity to gather prior to the state experience, said Angie Rushing, FCCLA advisor at Westview who, along with fellow advisor Lauren Freeman, helped host the other FCCLA organizations in the county.

“It was a pleasure to host our tight knit county FCCLA group for our conference at Westview. It was great to be together with our sister chapters and a good time was had by all!” reported Rushing.

Starting at noon, students enjoyed a fun lunch, after which Dresden FCCLA Chapter Historian Rachel Blassingame who also serves as the state FCCLA Vice President of Finance and Membership spoke along with a brief message of support from Lindsey Parham, the county’s Career and Technical Education supervisor. A painting activity reinforced the theme as budding artists filled their canvases with flowers.

Weakley County Schools Nurse Supervisor Beth Kempton, RN, who doubles as Westview’s school nurse, accepted items such as tissues, puzzle and large print books, personal care items and cards for residents at Diversicare of Martin.

Each school participated in the planning for the afternoon. FCCLA advisors at Dresden and Gleason are Pat Phillips and Sandy Bennett.
