Martin 2nd Graders End an Earth-Friendly Year

This is the image for the news article titled Martin 2nd Graders End an Earth-Friendly YearSystems thinkers underscore that “every change changes everything.” Students in Weakley County Schools certainly saw that premise in action as they met the challenge of one COVID precaution only to be faced with what to do about another resulting action.

For instance, shutting down the water fountains due to the threat of cross-contamination meant water filling stations had to be installed and/or cases of bottled water had to be obtained. That’s a lot of bottles.

Martin Primary second grade teachers quickly realized just how much plastic that change would generate. They decided to sponsor a second grade project to gather and recycle the bottles. From the first week of school to the last, used water bottles were collected and taken to the University of Tennessee at Martin recycling center.

“We have no idea how much plastic we kept out of our land fill,” said second grade teacher Kim Castleman. “But we can say for certain we've done our part this year to make a bad situation a little more Earth friendly.”

The school also expressed appreciation for the many community businesses and individuals who donated the needed water throughout the year.
