This is the image for the news article titled August School Board Meeting Addresses Calendar, Sick Leave, and MDEThe Weakley County School Board met August 6 and addressed several issues regarding reopening. (To view the meeting as recorded via Zoom, click here.)

The calendar was adjusted to accommodate the August 17 reopening. (See the website calendar tab for the updated calendar.) The delay of 10 days was covered by the state’s approval to use 5 additional stock pile days and reclaim work days. A discussion of whether to pull the days from fall break ended with the Board opting to retain a full week of fall break.

Director Randy Frazier asked the board to review sick leave policy as related to COVID-19. Due to potential isolations and quarantines, the number of days staff could be out would mount up quickly. The board asked that the policy be amended to reflect allowances for verified, medically-ordered COVID-19 related incidents and that the policy be reviewed by the district’s attorney. The final version will be presented at the next board meeting September 3.

Frazier also presented an update on reopening plans. He noted principals shared Monitored Distance Education (MDE) applications during registration and those are due Aug. 10. The plans are to provide additional funding for teachers to monitor the work of students who have opted for the MDE. Teachers will see the completed work of the student as he/she has interacted with it online, provide feedback and suggest additional resources if necessary, record grades and attendance. Though the students will be covering the same standards as those in the traditional classroom, the timing could be different. In light of potential disruptions for numerous students moving in and out of the classroom as different times, students who opt in now will only be given the option to return when the new semester begins in January.

Examples of the MDE materials can be found on the website homepage.

The board determined that students who choose to attend schools virtually through MDE will not be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities.
