Weakley County Schools Transportation Supervisor Ron Byington said law enforcement officers contacted him late Wednesday afternoon with a request for assistance in investigating a disturbance on one of the system’s buses. A subsequent review of video from the bus’s camera substantiated the report the sheriff’s office received, he noted.

According to Byington, Sheriff Deputy Kristin Childress, the investigating officer, stated that based on the video, their office would be pursuing a petition to juvenile court for one of the students involved. Byington stated school administrators and the transportation department will address the incident by following school board disciplinary policy.

Byington applauded the actions of the driver, “The safety of our students is our priority; misbehavior of any type which could distract the driver puts all our students’ safety at risk. This driver responded to the disturbance properly, by finding the nearest safe spot to pull over, addressing the students involved and notifying the proper authorities.”

Byington urges parents who have concerns at any time to contact him or their school principal.
