Weakley County Schools Coordinated School Health director Bethany Allen and Nursing Supervisor Beth Kempton set up the friendly competition that began on Monday when Allen brought the means to weigh and measure teachers and staff who are voluntarily participating in the challenge.

The winner will be based on the largest percentage of body fat lost.

Currently, 20 have signed up to participate.

“The reason we do body fat percentage is to get a better image of what was lost,” noted Allen. “We have a lot of people begin to work out and build muscle. They don't see a big change on the scale because muscle weighs more than fat. If we can show them that they are losing body fat, then it helps you see that working out is very beneficial even if the number on the scale does not move very much.”

When teachers filed into Kempton’s office on Monday (she also serves as the school’s nurse), they were ushered to several stations – blood pressure checks, height measurement, and scales. They were also given information explaining Body Mass Index, fat percentage, and desirable ranges.

The weigh ins will continue every Monday through the week after spring break.

The weight/fat percentage challenge is the third such challenge this year. The first two focusing on sleep and water intake were open to both students and faculty. This emphasis is faculty only. The next challenge will be an overall health challenge and will be open to the entire student body once again.

“I am accepting the challenge to improve my sleep,” said Kempton. “Plus it’s fun to do it together.”

Ed Baker, one of the few men who signed up, said the challenge came at a good time for him. “To be honest, especially during basketball season, it’s easy to not pay attention to personal health goals,” he confessed. “This will prompt me to pay attention.”
