Since January, the World Health Organization, the Center for Disease Control, state and local health agencies and we here at Weakley County Schools have been closely monitoring the movement and impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). State officials and each major health organization emphasize the need to be personally vigilant in our efforts to contain the spread of this new respiratory illness. We are being updated frequently and are fortunate that to date there have been no reported cases in Weakley County.

I want to personally take the time to assure you that Weakley County Schools faculty and staff are doing our best to be proactive in our efforts to address this newest infection, the traditional flu and other viral infections.

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) virus, and we are learning more about it every day. There is currently no vaccine to protect against COVID-19. At this point, the best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to the virus that causes it. Stopping transmission (spread) of the virus through everyday practices is the best way to keep people healthy.

Good hygiene is extremely important in efforts to limit the spread of this and other bacterial or viral infections. Students and staff receive numerous reminders about how to limit the spread of airborne illnesses from their school nurse, classroom teachers, through announcements made over the intercom and in the form of posters displayed throughout each building. To be the most effective in the prevention of illnesses being spread we need your help.

We ask you to take extra time with your child or children to discuss the importance of proper hand washing, then show them how. Teach them the importance of covering their mouth and nose for a cough or sneeze – either with a tissue or their arm. These simple activities will help lessen the spread of illness throughout families, the school system and the community at large.

I also want to assure each family that we have instructed our cleaning staff to thoroughly sanitize common areas daily. Athletes, and those involved in after school activities, are encouraged to take all personal equipment, articles of clothing or uniforms home daily for laundering or cleaning.

The Coronavirus and many other forms of germs are a part of our day-to-day lives. We all must remain calm, vigilant and educated on the proper means of containing its spread so that our normal routines may continue with as little disruption as possible.

I invite you to visit our website, www.weakleycountyschools.com to locate the link to the Centers for Disease Control. Here you will find the latest information on the impact Coronavirus is making across the country as well as the information we are using to educate our students and staff.

Additional information about COVID-19 can be found at the Tennessee Department of Health’s website.

Please feel free to contact either your child’s school or the central office at any time if you have questions.

Respectfully,

Randy Frazier, Director
